Biography

Mario Schifano was an Italian artist known for his Postmodern collages blending advertising imagery, wrapping paper, and painted elements. His work frequently drew from popular culture and art history, featuring iconic brand logos and kitsch motifs in a Pop Art style, including lily pads and horses. Schifano embraced various media throughout his career, moving between painting, film, music, and photography, often merging multiple forms. In the 1960s, he produced a series of politically charged works, addressing the Vietnam War through films and photograms. Born in Homs, Libya, on September 20, 1934, he moved to Italy as a child. Despite struggling with drug addiction, Schifano maintained a prolific artistic career, gaining recognition until his death in Rome on January 26, 1998, at the age of 63.
